How to Use a Video to Dry Out a Wet Smartphone – At Least a Little Bit

Has your smartphone or another speaker gotten wet? Removing water from your smartphone using a video? What sounds like nonsense at first glance actually has a serious background.

The idea that sound sequences in a video can shake off water droplets from speakers is based on the basic functioning of speakers and the physics of sound:

A speaker generates sound waves by moving air back and forth. This movement is caused by the rapid vibrations of the speaker’s diaphragm. When the speaker produces low-frequency sounds, such as deep basses, the air is moved particularly strongly.

If water has accumulated in or around the speaker diaphragm of a smartphone, this air movement caused by the sound waves can cause the water droplets to move and be ejected from the speaker openings. This works similarly to the Apple Watch, which has a special function to remove water after contact with liquids. A specific sound frequency is played, which generates the necessary vibrations to push the water out of the speaker grills.

However, there are limitations to this method. The effectiveness largely depends on how much water is in the device and where exactly it is located. Smartphones have many small openings and cavities, such as the SIM card slot or the USB port, which cannot be reached by the air movements of the speakers. In these cases, water may remain in the device even if the speaker area becomes drier.

Experts confirm that while this method works to some extent, it should not be seen as a complete solution, as you can read more about here. It can help to remove small amounts of water from the speaker area, but it is not a guarantee that all water will be removed from the device. Additionally, it is always risky to expose electronic devices to moisture, and even if it works temporarily, the device’s long-term water resistance could be compromised.

tl;dr

Playing deep bass frequencies can generate enough air movement through a speaker to push water droplets out of a smartphone’s speaker openings. However, this method does not always work completely and cannot effectively reach other areas of the phone. Therefore, you should not rely solely on this method and should consider other drying methods if possible when dealing with water damage.
