March 10th is Mario Day (MAR10), celebrating Nintendo’s iconic plumber. Since his 1981 debut in Donkey Kong, Mario became gaming’s most recognizable character, appearing in over 200 games selling more than 600 million copies.

From Jumpman to Superstar

Creator Shigeru Miyamoto originally named him Jumpman. The ‘Mario’ name came from Nintendo of America’s landlord, Mario Segale. Super Mario Bros. revolutionized gaming in 1985, establishing conventions still used today.

Cultural Phenomenon

Mario transcended gaming. The 1993 movie (despite being terrible) and 2023’s animated hit brought him to theaters. Theme parks feature Mario lands. Merchandise spans clothing, toys, and breakfast cereals. He’s more recognizable than Mickey Mouse to many children.
