National Pet Day: Fur, Feathers, and Love

Celebrating All Pets

April 11th is National Pet Day, founded by Colleen Paige in 2006 to celebrate pets and promote adoption. Unlike National Puppy Day’s focus on young dogs, this day honors all companion animals—dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and everything in between.

Health Benefits

Pet ownership improves physical and mental health. Pets reduce stress, lower blood pressure, encourage exercise, and combat loneliness. They provide routine, purpose, and unconditional love—especially valuable for elderly and isolated individuals.

Adoption Saves Lives

Millions of animals await homes in shelters. Adoption saves lives and reduces demand for unethical breeding operations. Adult pets often make better companions than puppies or kittens—they’re past destructive phases and grateful for second chances.

Exotic Pets

Beyond cats and dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds, and fish provide companionship. Each species requires specific care, enrichment, and commitment. Research before acquiring any pet to ensure you can meet their needs.

Spoil Your Companion

On April 11th, give your pets extra attention, treats, or playtime. Donate to animal shelters, volunteer, or consider fostering. Our pets give so much; they deserve our best care.
