Accidental Invention
February 24th celebrates National Tortilla Chip Day, honoring the crunchy snack born from resourcefulness. Rebecca Webb Carranza created tortilla chips in the 1940s to use misshapen tortilla rejects from her Los Angeles factory.
From Mexican Roots
Tortilla chips descend from totopos, crispy tortilla pieces served with Mexican meals. Corn tortillas, cut into triangles and fried, provided a sturdy vehicle for dips and salsas long before commercial production.
Doritos and Beyond
In 1964, Frito-Lay introduced Doritos, flavored tortilla chips that became a snacking phenomenon. Today, tortilla chips outsell potato chips in some regions, available in endless flavors from plain salted to spicy jalapeño and exotic gourmet varieties.
The Perfect Dipper
Tortilla chips excel at scooping salsa, guacamole, queso, and bean dip. Their triangular shape and sturdy construction handle heavy loads without breaking. Nachos, invented in 1943, layer chips with cheese and toppings for a complete meal.
Crunch On
On February 24th, open a bag or make your own from fresh corn tortillas. Whether plain or loaded with nacho toppings, tortilla chips prove that sometimes the best inventions happen by accident.
