Opinion: Why the Elon Musk peace plan for Ukraine is celebrated only by Russia

Musk’s plan for Ukraine

Elon Musk has proposed on twitter a plan for peace between Ukraine and Russia:

Ukraine-Russia Peace:

– Redo elections of annexed regions under UN supervision. Russia leaves if that is will of the people.

– Crimea formally part of Russia, as it has been since 1783 (until Khrushchev’s mistake).

– Water supply to Crimea assured.

– Ukraine remains neutral.

This plan becomes controversial on twitter and especially pro-Russian users celebrate it – no wonder, this plan does not protect any interests of Ukraine.

The plan in detail

Thus, it already lacks a clear designation of the aggressor, namely Russia. But let’s get to the individual points of the proposal:

Repeat of the elections in the annexed regions.

The votes on independence should be repeated under UN supervision. Russia should leave Ukraine if this is the will of the people.

In this regard, it should be said that there can be no neutral vote now or in the foreseeable future; too many have been displaced and Russia has already pursued a policy of Russification in recent months. Only when civil order has been restored in the territories can a vote be considered.

But holding a vote while Russian occupiers are in Ukraine is absurd.

Crimea formally belongs to Russia

Yes, Crimea has a checkered history. And I also wrote back in 2014 that Crimea was Russian. But to directly create facts here now is again just a reward of Putin’s aggression. This question can be discussed in the future, when the Russian troops have withdrawn here as well, but not now. The same applies accordingly to the point that the water supply to Crimea must be ensured.

Ukraine remains neutral

Ukraine, like any other sovereign state, must be free to decide on its alliance membership. Item.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that Musk only acknowledges Moscow’s war aims and the status quo that has been achieved. No words on who is the aggressor here, who invaded a sovereign state in violation of international law, who is destroying Ukrainian infrastructure, and who is committing war crimes and other human rights violations here.

So this plan is basically not worth discussing further.
