Global Health Priority
March 20th marks World Oral Health Day, established by the FDI World Dental Federation to raise awareness about oral diseases that affect nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide. Oral health is essential to overall health and quality of life.
Preventable Diseases
Most oral diseases—dental caries, gum disease, oral cancer—are preventable with proper care. Yet many lack access to dental services, fluoridated water, or oral health education. Inequality in oral health mirrors broader health disparities.
Systemic Connections
Oral health connects to overall health. Gum disease correlates with heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Oral bacteria can travel through the bloodstream, affecting distant organs. Good oral hygiene protects more than teeth.
Childhood Habits
Establishing oral hygiene habits in childhood prevents lifetime problems. Yet dental caries remains the most common chronic childhood disease. School dental programs, fluoride treatments, and sealants help protect young smiles.
Be Proud of Your Mouth
On March 20th, commit to better oral care. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss, limit sugar, and schedule dental checkups. A healthy mouth enables eating, speaking, smiling, and living fully.
