Born February 12, 1809
Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, the same day as Abraham Lincoln. Despite family pressure to become a physician or clergyman, Darwin’s passion for natural history led to a five-year voyage that changed science forever.
The Voyage of the Beagle
From 1831 to 1836, Darwin sailed as naturalist aboard HMS Beagle. Observing South American fossils, Galápagos finches, and diverse wildlife, he noticed patterns suggesting species changed over time. The idea of evolution began forming in his notebooks.
On the Origin of Species
After decades of careful research, Darwin published his masterpiece in 1859. He proposed natural selection as evolution’s mechanism: organisms with advantageous traits survive and reproduce, gradually changing species over generations. The book sold out immediately and revolutionized biology.
Scientific Legacy
Darwin established evolution as biology’s foundational principle, later confirmed by genetics. Modern medicine, agriculture, and conservation all depend on evolutionary theory. Darwin’s ‘dangerous idea,’ as philosopher Daniel Dennett called it, explains life’s diversity through natural processes.
Darwin Day Celebrations
February 12th commemorates Darwin’s contributions to science and reason. Museums host events; scientists give public lectures; educators teach evolution. Darwin Day celebrates curiosity, evidence-based thinking, and humanity’s ongoing quest to understand our world.
