A UN Observance
January 24th marks the International Day of Education, established by the United Nations in 2018 to recognize education’s role in peace and development. This day highlights both progress made and challenges remaining in providing quality education for all.
Education Transforms Lives
Education is the foundation of personal and societal progress. Educated individuals earn higher incomes, enjoy better health, and participate more actively in their communities. Educated mothers have healthier children. Educated populations drive economic growth and innovation.
The Global Challenge
Despite progress, 244 million children and youth worldwide remain out of school. Conflict, poverty, discrimination, and inadequate infrastructure prevent access. Girls face particular barriers in many regions, with over 130 million out of school globally. The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented learning losses.
Digital Divide
Technology offers unprecedented educational opportunities, but the digital divide excludes many. Students in low-income countries and rural areas lack internet access and devices. Closing this gap is essential for equitable education in the 21st century.
Sustainable Development Goal 4
The UN aims to ‘ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’ by 2030. On International Day of Education, we recommit to this goal—supporting schools, teachers, and students worldwide. Education is not a privilege; it is a fundamental human right and the key to our shared future.
