X (formerly twitter) continues to use the gender star in Germany, even for new content. For example, the spelling “Follower*innen” is used instead of the actually gender-neutral “Follower” or at least “Follower und Followerinnen”.
Apart from the fact that it does not follow the rules of spelling and makes texts much more difficult to read – especially for non-native speakers and people with dyslexia – it has become much more than just an unsuitable attempt to achieve equality and inclusion through language.
The gender star has also become a political signal and identifying mark of various left-wing, woke and identity-political movements.
It is absurd, then, that X, the platform of Elon Musk, who opposes the woke mind virus, uses a signal of this very ideology.
There have been repeated attempts to draw Musk’s attention to this problem with the German X, but they have not really gotten through to him yet – they were too sporadic.
My goal is to get the gender star out of the German-language X – so that a smooth reading flow is restored, the texts are in line with the spelling rules and no more political signal is set. Because X as a platform should be politically neutral.
Do you want to support this? Then check back here regularly and follow me on X at @stagerbn (Geman Account) or @stagerbnen (English), I will point out the individual actions here and via my X accounts.
As a first step, I will repeatedly point out the gender star in German X and its meaning in corresponding posts by Musk.
