Roman Number CCXCIX

Roman numeral CCXCIX represents the Arabic number 299.

It is built from three parts: CC for 200, XC for 90, and IX for 9. Put together, they form 200 + 90 + 9 = 299.

At first glance, 299 might look like “one less than 300,” but Roman numerals do not usually write it that way. A form such as CCIC would be non-standard, because Roman numerals use subtraction only in specific combinations. The accepted form is therefore CCXCIX.

This numeral is also a nice example of two subtractive pairs in one number: XC means 100 minus 10, and IX means 10 minus 1.

The next number is CCC for 300, while the previous number is CCXCVIII for 298.

Why is 299 not written as CCIC? Because Roman numerals do not subtract I from C. The number must be split into hundreds, tens, and ones: CC + XC + IX.
