Modifications to the Airframe

An Airframe Change is an officially documented modification to the structure of an aircraft – for example a reinforced wing attachment, a new antenna fairing or a changed hatch. Every such modification is recorded as an AFC so that the configuration of each aircraft in the fleet remains traceable.

Airframe Change in Context

AFC belongs to the family of documented aircraft modifications, alongside the Airframe Bulletin (AFB), which announces structural notices, and the Aircraft Armament Change (AAC) for weapon systems. Together they form the modification history of an aircraft type.

The abbreviation appears in maintenance logs and technical orders. In other contexts, however, AFC usually stands for the Air Force Cross, a British and formerly American decoration for bravery – or for the Armament Fire Control in weapon system documentation.
