The Automatic Pilot
The Automatic Flight Control System is the autopilot of a military aircraft – but much more than the cruise control of a car. It stabilizes the aircraft, holds altitude, course and speed, and can fly complete mission profiles automatically, from precise approaches to low-level flight along a terrain profile.
What the AFCS Can Do
- Stabilization – keeps the aircraft steady even in turbulent air.
- Autopilot functions – holds altitude, heading and speed as commanded.
- Coupled approaches – flies precision approaches down to landing automatically.
- Mission profiles – follows pre-programmed routes, for example terrain-following flight at low altitude.
In modern fly-by-wire aircraft the AFCS is deeply integrated with the flight controls: there is no mechanical path from the stick to the control surfaces anymore. The abbreviation appears constantly in avionics documentation – and with the expansion of drones, automatic flight control has become the heart of military aviation.
