Logistics as a Command

The Air Force Logistics Command was a major command of the US Air Force, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. From 1944 to 1992 it was responsible for the technical support of the entire Air Force: procurement of spare parts, maintenance depots, supply chains and the engineering support of all aircraft types.

What Became of the AFLC

In 1992 the AFLC merged with the Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) to form the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), which still performs these tasks today. The old abbreviation AFLC appears accordingly in older organization charts, manuals and historical documents of the Air Force.

In those documents, AFLC stands for the era when logistics was an independent command – and for the insight that modern air power depends as much on spare parts and maintenance as on pilots and aircraft.
