The Guardians of the Airspace

Air Traffic Control directs air traffic safely and efficiently: controllers on the ground guide aircraft through takeoff, flight and landing, maintain separation and coordinate the airspace. Without ATC, modern aviation – civil and military – would be unthinkable.

ATC in the Military

Military air traffic control works on aircraft carriers, on airbases and in control centers. It is even more demanding than civil control: combat aircraft fly fast, in formations, and often under radio silence. On an aircraft carrier, the approach controller is the last hand that guides the pilot onto the deck.

ATC appears in this meaning constantly in aviation documentation. The same abbreviation is also used for the Air Training Corps – but in connection with airspace, radar and controllers, it always concerns air traffic control.
