The Balance Point of the Aircraft
The center of gravity is the balance point of an aircraft: where all weight forces act together. The CG decides whether the machine flies stably – or becomes uncontrollable. It is one of the most important values of every flight.
Why the CG Must Be Watched
Every loading changes the balance: fuel consumed, cargo dropped, passengers seated. If the CG moves too far forward or backward, the aircraft becomes unstable – at the limit, unflyable. Pilots calculate the CG before every flight, loadmasters control it on every loading.
CG appears in this meaning constantly in flight and loading documentation. Note that in naval contexts CG also stands for the guided missile cruiser – in loading plans and weight calculations, however, CG always means the center of gravity.
