The Rocket That Spreads Chaff
A Chaff Dispensing Rocket spreads radar decoys over a wide area: the rocket flies into the threatened airspace and ejects chaff – thousands of tiny metal strips that confuse enemy radar. CHAFFROC is the tool to create a false radar picture.
Why Chaff Works
Radar sees metal: the chaff strips reflect the radar pulses like a real target. A whole cloud of chaff looks like an aircraft formation or a ship on the screen – the real target disappears in the deception. Ships and aircraft use chaff rockets to evade radar-guided missiles.
CHAFFROC appears in this meaning mainly in armament documentation. It belongs to the self-protection systems – together with flares against infrared-guided missiles. The principle is old and remains modern: deception instead of armor.
