The Sonobuoy That Listens Directionally
The Directional Command Activated Sonobuoy System is a sonobuoy system with directional listening and command activation: the buoys are dropped, activated by command and listen directionally for submarines. DICASS is a key technology of air-based submarine hunting – the underwater ears of the patrol aircraft.
Why Sonobuoys Are Dropped
An aircraft cannot listen under water itself: it drops buoys that do the listening. The directional buoys determine the direction of the noises – from several buoys the position. Command activation saves energy and extends the listening time.
DICASS appears in this meaning mainly in anti-submarine warfare documentation. Together with DIFAR (the directional frequency system), it forms the sonobuoy family of the submarine hunters.
