The abbreviation FID stands for Fault Isolation Detection in the military field, especially in the US. You can find more abbreviations starting with FI here. Also take a look at our list with military acronyms.
What does FID mean in detail?
Fault Isolation Detection combines the localization and detection of faults in technical systems. The term is closely related to FD&I (Fault Detection and Isolation) and describes the same capability from a slightly different angle: recognizing that a fault exists and identifying its source.
How FID works
Modern military systems analyze redundant sensor data, compare signals with each other and run self-tests automatically. As soon as a measured value becomes implausible, the FID function determines which component or signal path is responsible and reports this to the crew or the maintenance system, for example as a labeled fault flag like the Fadec Fail Bit.
Operational benefit
Precise fault isolation shortens troubleshooting on the ground from hours to minutes. Mechanics can replace the defective line-replaceable unit directly, which increases the availability of aircraft, ships and vehicles and reduces operating costs.
