What does GS mean in detail?
GS is the common abbreviation for glide slope – the ideal descent path during an instrument approach. The term is described in detail under GLS, which stands for the same flight path.
Usage in the cockpit
On the displays and instruments, GS indicates the deviation from the ideal glide path: centered means on path, deflections indicate too high or too low. Together with the localizer, which controls the lateral course, it guides the aircraft precisely to the runway.
Operational importance
A stable glide slope is the prerequisite for a safe landing. If the aircraft cannot be kept on the GS, the approach is aborted with a go-around – especially at night, in bad weather and on short runways.
