What does HOV mean in detail?

Hover is the state of stationary flight of a helicopter: the aircraft remains in position over a fixed point without moving forward. The abbreviation appears in cockpit displays, checklists and radio communication.

How hovering works

The helicopter generates exactly as much lift as its weight, so that it neither climbs nor descends. The pilot controls the position constantly with small corrections, because helicopters are inherently unstable. Modern systems support hovering with automatic stabilization.
