What does HUD mean in detail?

The Head Up Display is the projection display in the cockpit that shows flight data directly in the pilot’s field of view. The pilot can read the information without taking the eyes off the outside world – “head up” instead of looking down at the instruments.

How the HUD works

A projector generates the symbology – altitude, speed, flight path vector, weapon aiming – and mirrors it into a transparent combiner glass. The display appears floating in front of the windshield, overlaid on the view of the sky and terrain.

Operational importance

The HUD is standard in all modern combat aircraft and increases safety and combat effectiveness. Together with helmet-mounted displays such as the HMD, it forms the display technology of the modern cockpit.
