Airborne Coordination Against Submarines
The anti-submarine air controller is the specialist who coordinates the aerial portion of anti-submarine warfare from the air. Flying aboard helicopters or maritime patrol aircraft, the ASAC manages the sensors, sonobuoys and weapons, and directs other aircraft onto the contact.
Why Coordination From the Air Matters
Anti-submarine warfare involves many players: patrol aircraft, helicopters, ships and their sonars. The air controller aboard combines the information and ensures that all sensors work together instead of interfering with each other. Without this coordination, contacts would be lost and weapons wasted.
ASAC appears mainly in naval aviation documentation. The best-known platform carrying such specialists is the British Sea King ASaC, whose radar crews directed anti-submarine and anti-ship operations for decades.
